It was originally breed as a fighting dog for sport and at that time weighed about 45 pounds. Since pit fighting has been banned, these dogs have been breed to be smaller and less aggressive animals that get along great with young and old people a like.

This breed is the very first native breed introduced in the United States, and was done in 1878. The breed has changed some over time though.
